I’m mostly a windows guy, I work in IT but the company I work for doesn’t support Linux, I’ve used backtrack before for wifi hacking purposes but other than that I’ve never really used Linux.
I want to learn and thought the best way would be to jump right in, I got a spare old Acer Aspire 5349 and installed OpenSuse on it, only problem is it won’t connect to the internet through wired or wireless connection! I’m assuming that this is because I need to install the drivers for this functionality but the Acer website only seems to support Windows drivers.
openSUSE 12.3 has an issue where the wired network comes up not configured and wireless needs security settings of SSID and pass phrase to start working.
**First, all help requests must start with openSUSE version and Desktop which you failed to do. **
So, if I can assume its openSUSE 12.3 & KDE desktop, the do this:
Start YaST (enter root password) / Network Devices / Network Settings / If Network Manager is enabled, answer Yes to the warning.
Next you do:
Select Global Options Tab / Network Setup Method / Check "Traditional Method with ifup"
Next you do:
Overview Tab / Select Wired Network Card / Pick Edit Button / Make sure to select DHCP and then accept the config.
Next you do:
Select Global Options Tab / Network Setup Method / Check "User controlled with NetworkManager / Select OK at the bottom of the screen"
Do a full system update on wired before you try to setup the wireless connection.
