Can't connect to network [network card seems to be OK]

Hi everyone…

yesterday i’ve installed openSuse 11.2 on my laptop (dell studio 15).
Today at work i tried to connect to the wireless network, but i couldn’t. First, the network card wasn’t being recognized, but after a long time trying i was able to set it up, for this i used this command:

zypper in broadcom-wl broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop

So now, the networkmanager detects all the networks around, but i cannot (or i don’t know how to) connect to any. I’ve also tried to configure my connections with yast, but i have the same result.

Here are the result for some commands:

# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth1 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:""
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
          Bit Rate:54 Mb/s Tx-Power:32 dBm
          Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Managementmode:All packets received

eth0 no wireless extensions.

# lspci

                    ESSID:"MYJOBWIRELESS"
                    Mode:Managed
                    Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)
                    Quality:5/5 Signal level:-49 dBm Noise level:-85 dBm
                    Encryption key:on
                    Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s
                              24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s
                              12 Mb/s; 48 Mb/s

I think i’m close to get this done, but i’m on a rush, so i need some help.

Thanks a lots in advance.

Do you have the latest updates? The original 11.2 had some problems that are
mostly corrected. With NM, you need toi use the “Manage Connections” option in
the applet. Putting in an encryption secret from the popup still does not work.

thanks for the answer…

so how can i get the lastest updates? maybe it’s a stupid question, but i’m too newbie on linux. I remember yesterday i installed some updates… how can i be sure??

Also, i’ve been using “Manage Coneections” option with NM, i added a wireless connection but it doesn’t work, when i click on accept button it shows me another popup window where i do the same stuff.

Thanks again.

well… so i’ve disabled networkmanager and tried this:

ifup eth1
    eth1 device: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)
command 'iwconfig eth1 key off' returned
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Invalid argument.
Starting DHCP4 client on eth1. .
    eth1 IP address: 192.168.1.102/24 (linux-2pyo)

And now i have access… any ideas why this hapenned???

It may be that you got the configuration right with ifup, and not with NM. It
may also be that you don’t have the latest NM. Use YaST => Software => Online
Update and get all the latest except for a new kernel. As you are using an
out-of-kernel driver, it will need to be rebuilt and reinstalled every time the
kernel changes.

If you have disabled NM, and managed to get wireless to work then it must be a fault of NM. Try installing WICD, it works much better, under ifup, than networkmanager, and gives you all the normal wireless options (different APs etc).

Upgrade to KDE4 4.3 or 4.4 RC1. The knetworkmanager was completely revised. On 4.3.1 it did not work (used WICD) but now it works like a charm.

Thanks to everyone…

Sorry 'bout my ignorance… how can i upgrade kde?

Thanks once again.

Search the forums, there’s a lot of posts about this with proper instructions.

You don’t have to apologize for ignorance. We were all born ignorant and will be when we die, just a tiny little bit less.

Good luck. If you don’t succeed, start a new thread asking for help on upgrading KDE4. The title of this thread does not match with what it’s about.
