Can't change user or close session

Hi,
I’m using OpenSuse 12.2 and since I upgraded from version 12.1 I’m not able to log out. I’m using both LXDE and XFce, the problem is the same in both windows managers. When I log out the screen turns black and shows console messages (i.e. “Resuming…”). At that point the only thing I can do is to press the power button or ALT+Ctrl+F1 and go to a different console and start lxdm again.
How can I solve this issue? What additional info should I give you for a better description of this issue?
Thank you very much in advance,
Luis Pablo

Maybe provide some information on your graphic card. As far as I know, most people are not having this problem.

Sure! My computer is a Dell Studio 1555 and graphic card is:
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

Thank you!

How? Online or offline?

Online upgrade method
Offline upgrade method

Since I needed to upgrade more than one computer I downloaded the DVD iso image and did an offline upgrade. After that I installed all the updates.
Thank you!

With the offline method there is danger of having still rpms from the older distribution, and
you have to check for them as I explained in the wiki. Till you are sure of consistency you
should not pursue other “phantoms”

Hi Carlos, please give me a link to that wiki, I can’t find that wiki. I just found this:
SDB:How to migrate to a new openSUSE version - openSUSE

Hi Carlos, I’m sorry, please ignore my previous post, the links are in one of your first posts. Thank you!

Hi Carlos, I followed the steps in the tutorial but I still have the same issue, when I log out I get a black screen with a blinking cursor or latest boot messages.

Then if there are no leftovers from the previous version, packages or configuration, I don’t
know what could be the problem.

What login manager are you using? You could try to change to another.

I am having the exact same problem and I have an NVIDIA card so I doubt it is a problem with the graphics.

I did a clean virgin install.

I tried the suggest of changing the login manager. but now I can’t login.

What did you do exactly?

I used yast to change the display manager from LXDE to wdm and then rebooted.

There should not be a need to change/add the windows manager The proper manager should be installed period. If it is not perhaps you have a damaged media or ISO.

As to NVIDIA there are problems with the Nouveau driver and some NVIDIA card so don’t just sweep it under the rug.

Look I tried the only suggestion that had been posted to this thread. so please less angst.

And the original poster has an intel graphics card and I have an NVIDIA, so since we are both having the problem I am doubting it is graphics card related.

They’re talking about the display manager, not the window manager. And
there have been suggestions elsewhere that there might be configuration
errors in gdm, so it’s a relatively low risk test that might bring some
benefit, IMHO.

But I’m surprised that nobody has asked to see the logs - system and
xsession for starters.

Assuming wdm is installed, it should work. You probably can log in text mode as root, and
change it editing file “/etc/sysconfig/displaymanager”. If you need to install something, yast
also runs in text mode.

I can’t login as root. I tried every option wdm showed. Thinking I will have to get knoppix or something so I can boot off CD and and then edit /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager.

I said to login in text mode. Surely you can. And no, it is not in the wdm screen, use the text
virtual terminals instead.

So how does one get a text login instead of a graphic one without first logging in on the graphical login screen?
