Can't change position of desktop on monitor DELL E228WFP

Hi,

I have installed openSUSE 11.1 on my desktop computer as part of a dual-boot (along with Windows Vista). Unfortunately the desktop appears about 4cm shifted to the right, while its position under Windows is perfectly fine.

SaX2 tells me the graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro and the Monitor is DELL E228WFP. My Resolution is 1680x1050. And here’s another funny thing. After setting the resolution on SaX2 I am entering a menu to test the new resolution, where I should be able to shift and resize the desktop. But all the buttons with the arrows that should solve my problem right away show no effect.

Anybody got an idea, what I am doing wrong or why SaX2 fails here?

Konstantin

PS: I can recenter the desktop using the monitors own menu, but then the screen is off to the left under windows. Unfortunately Windows doesn’t even seem to have a graphics menu (like the one in SaX2) where I could fix that.

I’ve now set the synchronization rate in both systems the same (60 Hz), but that didn’t change anything.

Could it be, that I am missing some proprietary driver, that is automatically loaded on windows?

Konstantin

In grub (bootloader) change vga=0317 to vga=0318. I ahd exactly the same problem and this worked perfectly for me.

Hi arboon,

thanks for the promissing reply. Unfortunately it did not work for me. When I add

vga=0x318

in the grub, immediately after the start the of the boot process the error message

Undefined video mode number: 318

Turns up. And indeed, when I issue a “scan”, the required 1680x1050 px resolution is not available.

Perhaps I am lacking the driver for the monitor? Do I have to install one separetely?

Kind regards,
