Cant browse as a user anymore

Hi i was able to browse as a user untill today, now i have to su
and run firefox as sudo to browse the internet

How can i set it back to users on internet programs like firefox, thunderbird?

Thanks
Steve

Really unsure what has happened here, I can’t think of any reason why.

In order I would first check a new acc see if it happens then, if it doesn’t then I would try resetting your hidden desktop environment folder by renaming.

If a new acc shows the symptoms still, if this was me I would like to know why and how rather than fixing.

But I would look at the permissions set on an app i.e ls -ll $(which firefox) make sure the bits allow your user to use it.

Next would be things like paths and groups but none of this really should just change on its own. So I’m back to why and how.

Your right i followed your advice and clicked on firefox on favourite applications and had no problems i tried on desktop and it now works.

Seems the problem has gone as it came i did have this once before so i formated and reinstalled.

This is very strange as you say im as baffled as you are

One thing that I did miss that may of been it you didn’t really describe what you meant by couldn’t as user.

Now on further thinking if it was crashing/not launching I would be inclined to think of a plugin as su root won’t have the same plugins. Next time should it happen try renaming the .mozilla folder.

Try moving the ~/.mozilla directory to ~/.mozilla.old and then try
starting Firefox.

mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla.old

Good luck.

What i meant was as the user i could open all internet related programs but they simply wouldnt connect to the internet. none of them crashed.

If sporadic I would be more inclined to think network related i.e. Bandwidth being used, updating at start up, dropping router etc

Maybe even perhaps beagle indexing meaning cpu usage is high.

I would investigate with ping and top next time it happens.

never never surf the net in any browser/email program/etc as root…

unless, of course you wish to have a root kit installed on your machine…
