"…could not find /dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD800BB-22JHCO_WD-WMAM9C538984-PART2.

want me to fall back to /dev/disk/… ( and on and on) (Y/N)"

then if i say yes it dose nothing and if i click no it dose nothing HELP!!! :’( i need this quick since i am planning to use it as a server and i dont know how to do it!!! and i have a DEADLINE!!!

Use the install dvd and boot with it and try the repair feature

Considering this is a new install anyway and it only takes 20 mins to install, you might want to consider installing again.

Thank you for your PM and request to discuss this privately. BUT I feel you will do much better in the Forum, that way you can benefit from everyones advice/input, as I am by no means the oracle on all Linux.

I suggest you take some time to read this
NEWBIES - Suse-11.0 Pre-installation – PLEASE READ - openSUSE Forums

Knoppis is: KNOPPIX - Live Linux Filesystem On CD
It’s a handy distro.

But get learning the basics first.

Post some specs on your computer so we can see what we are up against.
Mainboard
HD Type (sata/pata)
Graphics
Other OS installed
etc…

specs as far as i know, how can i tell?

ram = rdram 768mb
intell p4 1.8
hard drive = ide enhanced 80gb wd800
no idea what the board is
or graphics,
use to have windows web server 2003 installed but i overwrote that when i installed Linux,

Have read of this

Partitioning/Install Guide - openSUSE Forums

If you have nothing else installed to worry about. I would to a total wipe of your HD.

To install suse all you need to do is boot from the install dvd and accept the defaults. You should end up with three partitions.

/
/home
swap

tryed a wipe to… the install cant find the hard drive unless i type in insmod=ide-generic dose that have anything to do with it, do i need to boot in a speical way? and i cant install from a live cd cause it cant find the hard drive either

If you are using a dvd try a text mode install

help here: Installation Help - openSUSE

Text mode:
press and hold Shift on the keyboard when booting the installation media. This starts the text-mode boot menu instead.

N.B.
Make sure you have the jumper set to master

when exactly do i press shift? like while im loading the dvd? while the kernal is loading? loaded? please be more specific. and if you are talking about the hard drive… it is set corrctly to master and connected to the master cable,

ps the computer is very old… but with new hard drive

hold shift as it boots
reboot with the dvd in and hold shif

Also, I think if you boot the dvd and at the first install option screen if you press F3 it gives you access to TEXT as well as others like vesa

k trying what do i do after that?.. is there a more real time way that we could talk? we are like playing forum tag… lol ;)(like msn, yahoo, gmail, i have them all)

caf4926@hotmail.com

do you want me to reinstall using text mode?

It’s an idea

you are added on msn

my msn was in my profile
what’s yours

badboy9584@msn.com also what desktop should i choose, gnome, kde 4/3.5? i want the most easy to use and the “gooyest”

Thing is, I’m off to bed mate. Not by myself either, so it’s a nobrainer

I’m away.
