can't boot OSS11.3 /etc/inittab failed

Hello,

I use OSS11.3. Today when is started my laptop i got message on the screen
which was smth like this:
INIT: /etc/inittab[1000]: process field too long

INIT: /etc/inittab[1005]: process field too long

Enter runlevel:

and when I enter a runlevel (I have tried 3, and 5) I get

INIT: Entering runlevel: 3 (or 5)
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel

and system it hangs.

How can I repair my system ?

Seems that your /etc/inittab is corrupted. Anny idea why?

You could try runlevel 0 (zero). You may get a login prompt then (or get loged in atomaticaly).** In this special case**: login with root.
Then check the file e.g. with

cat /etc/inittab

Try to report what you get. As we do not know what you will find there, it is a bit difficult to decide what next.
When the 1000 and 100005 are line numbers, that is ridiculous and it couls be overwritten completely.

Well i have no idea why, as I remember i was not doing anything unusual and
system shutdown was normal.
I will try runlevel 0

Try the 0 directly in the bootscreen.

Try the 0 directly in the bootscreen.

same thing.
rlevel field too long (max 11 characters)
id field too long (max 4 characters)
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel

Can i fix system with live cd ?

In principle you can fix with a live CD. But it depends on the damage how this works out. Again, with a live CD you can at least mount the / partition (e.g. on /mnt) and then have a look at /mnt/etc/inittab. The problem is what to put there when it is overwritten (something akin to what is on the live CD?). Also I doubt if only /etc/inittab is corrupt (when we can not explain what happened, anything could have happened, dark future may be :frowning: ).

(when we can not explain what happened, anything could have happened, dark future may be ).

Yes, the dark force strong with this matter is…
smells like reinstall…

reinstalled, the mistery wanished to entroy…

Let us hope it will never return again.

Enjoy!
