can't boot into system - nothing changed

last thursday after I shut down everything was ok, installed no new software
today I tried to boot up and got can not find /dev/boot on grub2 error

I then used the restore cd to ‘update’ suse and remove grub2 and install grub - thinking it was a grub2 issue or bug

I got no errors but now it just goes into grub> prompt and no graphical menu, no menu.lst file present either

How do I boot into opensuse so I can run yast bootloader from there?

I have no idea what to do at the grub> menu

You need to reinstall Grub 2. Have a look at this: http://forums.opensuse.org/content/128-re-install-grub2-dvd-rescue.html

Consider that you could have a disk problem or the last shutdown did not write the cached data to the disk for some reason, like a bad shutdown. I say fix grub 2 and then if it works, back up your data and consider it may be time for a new hard drive.

Thank You,

I tried re-installing grub2
I also tried the instructions here → http://forums.opensuse.org/content/128-re-install-grub2-dvd-rescue.html
and I still get the same prompt grub>

since I need the file on the disk I can not just re-install the os and wipe everything
any ideas?

I ran fschk on /dev/sha5 (ext4 file system) and it reported no errors
memtest reports no errors
before I had tried to fix grub the first time (dual boot, I went into windows and ran disk check on NTFS partitions and they reported no errors)

I am sure if I can get into the suse install its ok, just can’t get there

I got grub2 menu back but now I get this error, hangs here and stops

/bin/udevadm: error while loading shared libraries libz.so.1: no such file or directory

I read some where you can get this error if you install the 64 bit Grub 2 on a 32 bit system. What bit setup are you trying to use?

Thank You,

I am using 64 bit system, AMD 1090T , 4gb ram, 500gb hard drive with 4 partiations, 1 windows, 1 ntfs backup of windows (acronis images) , 1 swap and 1 ext4

I have decided to try to re-install without formatting the ext4 partition and see if the files are still there, might be a mess but I will try to patch the changed files if it loads

reformatting to ext3 fixed it, trying ext4 with and without formatting did not work

I can’t say anyone has ever said they had to switch to ext3 in order to get openSUSE to boot grub, but what ever works is all we are ever looking for and happy to hear you did find a solution.

Thank You,
