Can't boot Dell XPS 9570 with kernel version 5.0

Ever since the update to kernel 5.0 and higher, I can’t boot my Dell XPS 9570. I can still boot the old 4.20 branch and that works fine.

Booting to kernel 5.0 works up until the point where the Plymouth boot loader would normally appear on screen. However, it seems that at that point, the screen is turned off (there doesn’t appear to be any backlight anymore either). I don’t know if the system simply stops or if the boot is finished in the background without any visual feedback for me.

The only thing that I can find in the /var/log/messages is a slew of ACPI messages but I’m not sure they’re related:

I’d love to troubleshoot this further but frankly, I don’t really know where to start. Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe something on SDB:nomodeset: Work Around Graphic Upgrade & Installation Obstacles - openSUSE Wiki will be helpful.

This is still Intel as primary output so https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109959 may apply. Actually now I noticed that this bug was reported for exactly the same notebook model.

Try to update your BIOS.

Thank you, arvidjaar. It appears that I am running into that exact same issue. I’ll watch that bug and hope that it’s resolved soon.

As mentioned in the thread at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109959 this issue is fixed by upgrading to the latest kernel: 5.0.8.
This issue is resolved.
