When trying to go through KDE System Settings to add a printer, it refuses with the message “Failed to get a list of devices: ‘Forbidden’” I was able to add the printer (Epson XP-640) through Yast but I used to find the KDE applet in previous openSUSE versions easier since it found the printer on the network automatically rather than needing a manual setup which is what I have had to do in yast. I suspect it is a permissions problem, but I don’t know where to look. Any guidance?
Try cups (localhost:631) or Yast2.
In systemsettings5 only root can add…
As noted, I installed the printer successfully with yast.
KDE System Settings asks for root privileges twice during the “Add printer…” procedure.
The KDE method of adding a printer has worked in previous versions of openSUSE. Not sure what the problem is now.
Mea culpa.
In my haste I didn’t see that the permissions dialog that comes up when trying to add a printer is prepopulated with my user name rather than with “root”. Entering “root” fixes the issue. In previous versions, though, the dialog came up with “root” already filled in.
On a related note, once the “add printer” box populates with a list of discovered printers, an error message appears at the top: “Failed to group devices: ‘The name org.fedoraproject.Config.Printing was not provided by any .service files’”
After dismissing this error message, however, the installation proceeds normally.
