Can't Access My Android Phone Out of The Box

Based on the market share of Android and that if you have a computer you probably have a phone too (depending on where in the world you live), I am guessing that quite a few openSUSE users have Android phones.

For that reason, I was disappointed to find out that when I plugged my android phone into the laptop via a USB cable it wasn’t recognised :frowning:

After digging around, it turns out that the mtp libraries are not installed by default!
I had to manually install the kio-mtp and libmtp9 to get it to work.

Is there a reason why they aren’t installed by default?

Maybe because you can only put so much on a DVD :open_mouth:

What gogalthorp says. Plus, there are many ways to connect to Android devices, depending on the way the manufacturors implement it on their devices.

To open this up a bit, many users prefer network-based connectivity anyway. Fraser_Bell’s thread may be of interest to those investigating various alternatives…

There is all sorts of less important stuff on the DVD though.
Obviously people have a different view on importance, but as I mention in another thread, I bet more people would prefer their phone to work than to have ant installed.
Although, maybe I should check when I get home to see if it is on the DVD but just not installed

I know that it is MTP and not strictly USB but it is connected via a USB and the expectation is that USB is plug and play.

It was doubly bad for me as networking wasn’t working and I downloaded an RPM on my phone to fix it then found I couldn’t connect via USB either!
