I am trying to install openSUSE 11.2 with Gnome desktop from the DVD in February’s Linux Magazine which I hope guarantees a good disk. However both the live DVD and a trial full installation load to a green screen without taskbar or icons meaning I cannot run any applications or even close down. The live KDE version runs OK but I wanted Gnome because I have had problems backing up Kmail in the past. I have run version 10.3 with Gnome successfully on this computer previously. Have I missed something? I am no Linux expert so please don’t get too techy.
Hi
Try pressing the ctrl+alt then press backspace twice to restart the gdm
process and login as your user.

I had tried ctrl+alt+del and ctrl+alt+backspace but neither had any effect. I have re-booted to try your suggestion but now after the log in box auto completes as “Automatic login” the screen goes black and the computer hangs before I get to the green screen I had originally. There must be something bad in the installation. I think I will reformat the partitions and try installing KDE.
Ok what video is on that machine. NVIDIA ATI or something else?
Nothing special just the on-board Intel Graphics 82845 that came with the ASUS motherboard. It’s a fairly old board from a Compaq EVO D310.
if you can remove the automatic user loagin with yast system configuration editor you can try log into icewm.
i also have problem with gnome desktop blanking and freeze comp.
that is one of the problems with automatic logins without entering passwd.
Thanks for your interest and suggestions but I have bitten the bullet, re-formatted the partitions and installed with KDE which works fine. Because of past Kmail backup problems I will use Opera for email.
Thanks again.
