…To date, Novell has been the primary “upstream” contributor to the Linux desktop, though Red Hat and others have also been involved. Unfortunately, these participants have primarily been concerned with the enterprise Linux desktop, which is more utilitarian in its ambition than what I suspect Shuttleworth has in mind…For desktop Linux to succeed, it must become much more enjoyable to use. People must want to use it. Shuttleworth understands this. This is the right step for Canonical. Some open-source developers see aesthetic beauty as a nice complement to the Linux desktop. It’s not. It is core, at least if the Linux desktop is to have a prayer of going mainstream.

It’s the extremely rare person that wants to go to the office and sit in a colorless cubicle with no pictures or decorations. How many Windows users do you know that keep the default Windows wallpaper on their office machines? Human nature is that we want creature comforts, bells and whistles, and to have fun…even in the enterprise.

Hi
Arrgh I wish, at my old job our machines were locked down including the
company logo as the background. At least I could use vpc in full screen
mode which is where I spent 98% of the time

Your system administrator’s underware was probably a bit too tight.

Yup, and they still managed to propagate virus… and they hid in a
