Canon MP780 / gutenprint

I have an MP780 for which the driver was found (I thought) in openSuse 11.0 but is not being found in openSuse 11.1.

I believed the printer support was included in gutenprint. Is there an issue with the printer utility?

It would seem the gutenprint MP780 driver is present in the driver hierarchy on 11.1 but there appears to be a problem associating the driver with the actual printer. Even manually browsing/opening the “ppd” file from the fs doesn’t manage to make the association with the printer.

Looking like a bug in the printer wizard or underlying driver mechanisms?

When are we going to get the latest version of gutenprint available through the opensuse build service (for 11.1). Would this perhaps resolve the problem?

[Solved]

OKAY: The problem here is that the name returned from the device on USB is “Canon MP780” but the name in the PPD file(s) in gutenprint is “Canon PIXMA MP780”. Hence, the drivers are not being matched to the printer. Perhaps there can be a short name or alias of some sort added to the PPD to stop this from happening in future?

By simply changing the name in “Assign Driver” from “Canon MP780” to “Canon PIXMA MP780” you should be able to match the drivers.

There seems to be A LOT of people on www looking for MP780 drivers not realising they are already contained in “gutenprint” which is installed as standard with OpenSuse 11/11.1. Hopefully this will lead some of you in the right direction.

This sounds as if it may be similair to the problems I’ve had with a Canon PIXMA MP500. Drivers worked in 11.0 but Yast in 11.1 couldn’t find the drivers, In my case, I was able to configure the printer through the CUPs browser interface (localhost:631) which found the gutenprint drivers and thereafter Yast recognizes the drivers. This may be an alternative solution.
