When I boot into the live environment and click something, the screen goes black. When it comes back, the plasmoid folder thing says, "The process for the file protocol died unexpectedly. When I click the kde menu button, the screen goes black, but this time all that comes back is the mouse. Any help is greatly appreciated.

-=WELCOME=- new poster!
maybe we can help you if you tell us some more…like
-the live KDE CD, what operating system version is it?
-did you download the install disk’s iso from software.opensuse.org? if
not, what is the source of the Live CD?
-did you check the integrity of the iso with md5 or sha1 checksum?
-did you burn the disk on to good quality media at the slowest speed
possible?
-did you check the validity of the disk’s contents as noted in this
image of the first green screen encountered when booting the live cd:
http://tinyurl.com/455hbml (there is no reason in going further with the
disk until we know if it self tests ok, or not…so, boot from the disk
and do that first–if it doesn’t check good post again asking for hint
on how to get a good disk…)
if the disk checks out ok:
-
is there a VM involved in this problem? which? and what host?
-
if you boot and at the same first green screen you just begin typing
nomodeset
(what you type will appear in the “Boot Options” line) and then press
enter, do these instances of the screen going black cease? if so, then
there is probably (almost assured) way to make it possible to boot up
without using nomodeset every time…
so, let us know . . .

Resolved this problem by installing with the DVD install instead of using a live environment.

happy you got going…i guess your problem was the live cd disk was
corrupted (or was being misread)…
