If you are having invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 issues then:
(a) logout.
(b) Use CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to a command line, and login there (as yourself).
(c) rm .Xauthority
(d) Use CTRL-ALT-F7 to get back to the GUI login screen.
And then login again, and see if that helped.
