Cannot play msnbc videos?

I am not sure why, but I cannot play any videos from msnbc.com. I’ve used this homepage for years. I have removed the iced tea flash from my setup and installed Adobe Flash directly from Adobe. Running adobe tests passed. I see the bouncing box. But I can’t play a video off of msnbc.com. I can watch videos off of other websites.

I just tried to toggle flash hardware acceleration and didn’t help.

Works fine here just using shockwave 24.0.r0.

icetea is for java not flash

Can you please direct me to instructions to install shockwave? I just went to adobe’s website and they only offer downloads for windows and mac.

Assuming you have packman repo (you should for all multi media stuff) then go to yast software management search for flash install flash-player. If you use chromium flash-player-ppapi also or instead

Here’s a screenshot of my software management

There is no flash-player available. (It’s alphabetical.)

Do you have the packman repo??

Are all repos pointing to the 42.2 versions???

Show repos

zypper lr -d

This is what my install looks like with both flash-player and the chromium plugin coming from packman

no problems with playing from msnbc

I think your problem is an old flash-plugin which mozilla has blocked (they started blocking old flash versions when updates are out)
because of a bad repo setup by adobe (missing pgp key) the flash-plugin does not get auto updated you need to manually do it
you should use flash from packman as it’s properly signed and it will be auto updated so do

zypper rm flash-plugin
zypper in flash-player

packman has a different name for flash it’s flash-player while adobe names it flush-plugin this is the reason why a vendor change will not auto install packman’s package
there is no shockwave for Linux and the Windows version is ancient what gogalthorp meant to say is flash
your screenshot is strange it shows the ppapi version of flash but not the npapi, tell us your repo’s

zypper lr -d

FF reports flash as shockwave flash here For what it is worth :stuck_out_tongue:

are you sure it’s a flash issue, that site might have migrated to html5 and Firefox with ffmpeg from the OSS repo only supports webm in html5 not h264 you need to do a full vendor change to packman to get the restricted codecs for full html5 support
tell us your repo’s

zypper lr -d

I never really understood the difference

I remember there is a separate Shockwave plugin for windows

Look in FF add-ons I see shockwave flash. The naming has always been weird. I don’t think there is a shockwave product anymore anyway but here that is how flash-player package shows in FF {shrug}

I just was thinking… forget about it. I’ll just use abcnews.com instead. I have the same problem on abcnews.com. It shows a preview but doesn’t play.

I just tried it and Firefox on LEAP 42.2 does play msnbc video’s for me
they still use flash not html5, imo if you have flash from packman it’s probobly an addon you might have like noscript or ghostery
make sure flash is from packman ie it’s the flash-player package then restart firefox in safe mode and try again

So, I just installed Firefox via Codeweavers Crossoveroffice. After installing, I had the same issue. Then in the bottle, I installed flash and had the same issue. Then I installed shockwave and I could play the videos. But the formatting is all messed up for the main nbcnews.com. So, I’d rather use native Firefox. But now I know I just need to get shockwave working. But Adobe doesn’t offer a Linux version of shockwave.

As I said I just install flash-player from packman it works. It shows as shockwave flash in FF add-ons

There is absolutely no point of using a Windows version of FF
