maybe your CD/DVD drive’s DVD portion is not supported by
Linux…how/new old is the drive…there ARE some drives that are
troublesome in different ways…
you might try to google on:
linux [drive brand] [drive model]
and
when you pop it into the drive, exactly what happens?
i mean, if NOTHING at all happens then…well, let me say it this
way: when i pop a DVD in my drive the hard drive light flashes
momentarily and then up pops on the screen a new window asking what i
wanna do (like, play DVD? open DVD with _____?, disregard? etc).
if you don’t even get that you can’t assume your drive won’t
play…instead, it is not reporting its state change to the operating
system…(when it does report, it might play fine)
AND
when you use this forum’s search function and (for example) search
for terms like DVD won’t play in thread subject line…what is
your experience when read through previous help here…like, the one
at http://tinyurl.com/bxsv6g
I recommend you first check each application to ensure they are pointing to the correct location for your CD/DVD reader. Rather basic, but sometimes users have this wrong.
There is also a bug (in 11.1) that impacts the ability to record to CDs/DVDs. I don’t know if that also affects reading … you could also apply a work around for the bug, in case it is impacting you. To do so, add your users to group “cdrom” and group “disk”.
You can do this under:
YaST > Security and Users > User and Group Management, select your user, press “edit” , click on “details” tab, click on the appropriate “additional group” (ie “cdrom” and “disk” ) and press OK. …
Then you must restart afterward.
If that does not help, just undo the above permissions change.
