Google may well be your best friend on linux!!
this Ubuntu forum How to play APE ? - Ubuntu Forums says that mplayer will play the .ape files; and discusses other options
one source said about .ape files that
Monkey’s Audio is a lossless audio compression codec . Since it is lossless, there is no quality loss from the source audio once it is compressed. It achieves a compression rate of about 40%. It’s main advantage over lossy compression formats such as MP3 is obvious, the quality of MP3 is not near as good. However, the files are much larger than simple MP3 files which is why MP3 files would be more available online than APE files.
so the advice on some forums has been to convert the files; I guess it depends how much of an audiophile you are: as to whether you can detect a loss of quality;
have you got mplayer installed? It will be in the packman repository; check you do NOT have videolan installed in your list of repositories:
oldcpu would advise
I recommend you also setup your repositories with 4, and only 4, repositories in your repository list. ie with only OSS, NON-OSS, Update and Packman. Just those 4. No others. Disable any others. (for now, … you can add more when you learn better the implications of adding others). There is guidance on how to do this here: Repositories - openSUSE-Community
I guess we could ask you:
do you have banshee installed?
have YOU tried to see if banshee plays the .ape files?
let the forum know how you get on
