Cannot login into plasma 5 session

Hi, I just installed plasma5-session from the standard repositories (was running KDE plasma workspace 4 before) and selected plasma5 session from kdm’s menu. During the splash screen, the KDE init script (or how it is called) seems to freeze - nothing happens, but switching to another TTY eventually works (killall -u kyoki then brings me back to the login screen). Right now, I installed xfce just to get things working again. I also tried switching back to KDE plasma workspace 4 (removing plasma5-session and installing kdebase4-openSUSE) but now the freeze also happens during the startup splash of KDE 4 :frowning:

Where can I look for error messages related to the KDE init script? This does not seem to be an X error as I don’t get error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Best regards, kyoki

~/.xsession-errors-:0, but that will be regenerated from scratch whenever you login.

I would suggest the following:

  • login to IceWM and run startkde in an xterm to see if Plasma4 or Plasma5 starts then
  • try to boot to recovery mode
  • try with a fresh user account

Most likely the problem is due to the user’s desktop effect settings.
What graphics card/driver are you using?

Thanks for the fast reply! Plasma 4 session works again (no idea why though, I did not change a thing).

I’ll try installing plasma5-session again and see whether the problem still exists. I forgot to mention that I also installed sddm, but that did not even bring me to the login screen, I was just greeted with a blank black screen. Maybe this is related to QML/Qt5?

I’ll try installing plasma5-session again and check whether the problem still exists.

[EDIT] I’m using an Intel integrated graphics card, with the i915 driver.

Best regards,
kyoki

Well, I’m embarrassed. Plasma 5 starts beautifully. I have no clue why this did not work in the first try. Thanks wolfi323 for the reply, I hope I did not completely waste your time.

Best regards,
kyoki

Did you switch to sddm in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager?
The default “breeze” theme uses parts of Plasma5, so if you have problems with that it’s likely that sddm doesn’t work either.
It might help to set a different theme in /etc/sddm.conf, “elarun” should work in any case…

Or is sddm with breeze now working as well anyway?

Well, I’m glad both KDE4 and Plasma5 work now.

Hard to guess what went wrong though, but if it’s ok now it doesn’t really matter I suppose…

Hm, I didn’t know I need to do that. I just enabled sddm via systemctl enable sddm.service. I did not work just before but ran when I booted in recovery mode. I’ll edit /etc/sysconfig and try again. Plasma5 now runs pretty well, I have to say.

Okay, I disabled sddm.service again and added “sddm” to DISPLAYMANAGER in /etc/sysconfig. Now sddm starts but is much slower than kdm. I’m considering switching back to kdm, but that is off topic. Thanks for the help, I guess we are done here.

Enabling sddm.service is an option as well.

But normally, openSUSE uses a generic display-manager.service that starts the one specified in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager, and falls back to xdm if it fails.

If you enabled sddm.service, there’s no need to modify /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager though, as that is not respected then, but sddm started unconditionally I think.

Plasma5 now runs pretty well, I have to say.

Good to hear!
