I cannot install 11.3 RC because the LiveCD fails to load either the installation or testing the OS.
I’ve had this with ubuntu Lucid Lynx and solved it by f6 during the liveCD booting and then choosing nomodeset. In the 11.3RC there is no such an option, therefor at kdm or installation I get to halt during which my computer appearantly runs at 100% and its fans are at full force, can be an hour and no resolution until I hit the button.
My video card is Nvidia 8400 (notebook).
I have tried text-install but then it asked me for login and password, how the heck should I know the password? that one was weird and I’m dumbfounded.
I am using 11.2 but zypper dup says there’s nothing to upgrade…
would love any assistance.
oh, and I’m new here
edit: Oh, This never happened to me on 11.2 nor on any other distro except 11.3RC and Ubuntu 10.4 (never happened on previous Ubuntu version either).
It could be the nouveau graphic driver does not like your nVidia 8400 ?
Try this: boot with the liveCD in your drive, and at the very first boot/splash screen, type “nomodeset” (no quotes) and that should appear in the options line. Then do a normal boot of the liveCD.
Please also note, it is very important that you do the md5sum comparison of the downloaded .iso file against the md5sum on the openSUSE web site. Also, when burning the liveCD, burn to a +R or -R (not an RW) at the slowest speed your burner will allow.
Edit: This thread has been moved to the pre-release/beta area, and all users who think they can help are invited to respond. Thanks for your understanding (wrt the thread move).
This thread was in the wrong area, and has now been moved to “Pre-Release/Beta area”. NNTP and WEB (ie browser based) users, you are welcome to respond to this thread now if you wish.
aha, so nomodeset was just missing and had to be written down. Ok that worked, did same now as well after the installation. Thank you. WIth my exact same experience with Ubuntu Lucid it will be fixed once I get to install the propriety driver for Nvidia.
However, I have another weird problem - it’s as if the repos are empty. I can’t get YAST to install any package because it doesn’t find anything
I have a question though - should I remove the new repos once 11.3 is official, enable the old ones, and then zypper dup?
Edit:
nevermind, it seems there are still some bugs (nothing new to add) that would put me off, no hibernation for example, can’t do without it as I’m using a laptop. I will resort to 11.2 again and wait patiently for 11.3 to come out officially and bug free (well, almost).
Right now it’s even quite dark for me to look at the screen for too long as there is no control over brightness. Maybe a HAL issue?
Just a quick question though since I do get quite confused and flooded with useful and non-useful info - how do I upgrade (in 11.2) to kde4.4? I did do it successfully once but pretty much forgot how.
