Cannot download HP scanner plugin

After yesterday’s Tumbleweed update (VERSION_ID=“20260527”) I found out that simple-scan required a new plugin for scanning with my HP laser multifunction printer.
This happens routinely, and it has always worked without issues.
Today however, the plugin installation complains that it cannot download the plugin.
Too bad, I though, I’ll download the plugin from HP directly.
I did it, and then I tried to install again, telling the installer to get the plugin from a local path instead of trying to download it.
It failed again, as it needed the .asc file. Next try was with the .asc file downlaoded from the same place where I had downloaded the plugin itself.
Another failure: the installer informs me that the .asc file does not match.
On my previous attempt without the .asc file I had noticed that I could tell the installer to proceed even without the .asc file, so I removed the .asc file and tried again.
This time the installation was successful, but after finishing the wizard simple-scan informed me that the installation had gone bad (why??).
Restarting simple-scan asks again to update the plugin.
Since then I have tried several ways of installing the plugin, sometimes successfully and sometimes not. But every time simple-scan would complain about the missing plugin.
I tried using the hp-diagnose_plugin command-line utility, which also informs me I have to update the plugin.
I’m out of ideas, every way I tried (even looking at similar threads here) didn’t work.
Does anybody have the same problem? Solutions?

Thank you in advance!
Cris

From the factory mailing list:

Heads-up for hplip users:

hplip has been updated to 3.26.4 in Factory because of the recently

announced CVEs CVE-2026-8631 and CVE-2026-8632 [1].

Unfortunately, HP hasn’t provided the proprietary plugin for 3.26.4 in

the usual download location yet. Attempts to install the plugin using

hp-toolbox or hp-plugin will fail [2].

Users of modern network printers can try to set up their devices with

IPP everywhere and sane-airscan and instead [3].

Martin

I found it here, but installing it through hp-plugin failed as detailed in my original post.

I use hp-plugin -i -p . in the directory where the hplip-3.26.4-plugin.run exists, it’s grumpy about the asc file, I skip, enter root pw and done…

Mmm I cannot download it with either wget or curl (HTTP 403).
If I open it with Firefox it show the source instead of downloading it, but since the source partially contains binary data I cannot use it, unless I find a way of convincing Firefox to download it.

@Cris70 file → save-as…

Same here (with the Sourceforge one), but the installation fails. Or, actually, it says that the installation was good, but then simple-scan asks again for an update, and hp-diagnose_plugin concurs.

Unfortunately I cannot browse the page (forbidden) so that’s not a solution :anguished:

P.S. Stupid me! I did file → save-as from your link in the forum and it worked, obviously! :flushed:

@malcolmlewis I downloaded the file from the link you provided, and it works!
I compared it against the one downloaded from Sourceforge, and they are NOT the same!
I hope that one is not malware…

No scanner app works they all crash with coredump. In downloaded new hplip.run. I running hplip.run got messages below. It says my distro is not valid.

Any idea of how to get scanners functioning. Scanning worked fine using several different apps on leap 15.5 but I changed to tumbleweed but haven’t tried a scan since I changed.

@Sauerland hplip on Leap 16.0 is only version 3.25.6?

@Sauerland hplip on Leap 16.0 is only version 3.25.6?

I got hplip v 3.26.4 as a direct download for SUSE from the hp website. The old version on my machine that apparently causes all the scanner software to crash was an inherited version from leap 15.6. I changed from leap 15.6 to tumbleweed a month or so ago.

Does your above statement indicate that there needs to be a tumbleweed version of hplip supplied by hp?

Can anyone scan with an hp printer/scanner on tumbleweed? If so what hplip are they using?

Should i make a submittal to hp regarding this?

tom kosvic

I see that the scanner software from hp is from a separate downloaded plugin.
That code is: hplip-3.26.4-plugin.run.

But the hp download site is not supplying that plugin as seen below. I went to the hp download site listed and the plugin code is there but would not download.

I think scanner plugin issuse is an hp problem.

@tckosvic No scanner here, just a laser printer, as indicated above, you need to use “save-as” after the clicking the plugin link, don’t forget to wait for the page to load.

Does your printer/scanner require the proprietary plugin?

Myhp laserjet printer works fine. usb connection.

The scanner requires an additional plugin to run. The scanner plugin has to have the same version as the main run software from hp. For the latest version of hplip that is 3.26.4 that is supplied by openSUSE and also HP developers portal, the plugin run module will not download. No scannner software runs, they all crash.

The hp site does not download the needed plugin file: hplip-3.26.4-plugin.run when ‘hp-plugin -i’ is run.

I see that arch aur is having trouble with this file also. The scanning plugin worked fine on leap 15.6. I have not done a scan since upgrading to tumbleweed.

Are any tumbleweed users able to scan using the hplip v3.26.4 software?

thanks, tom kosvic
