Cannot boot after kernel update to 4.20.2-1

Hello,
this was () my little adventure. Posting this here in hope to save someone’s hair.

I did a zypper dup last night, I agreed to all licence agreements, obviously and I ended up with a nice login prompt after reboot.
last kernel used was 4.19.x and the update was offering 4.20
I tried booting to old kernel, but no luck. -nomodeset did not help either.
I had no clue what was going wrong.

With the help of this forum, I have sorted this out now.

My gfx:

hwinfo --gfxcard | grep Model
  Model: "nVidia GM108M [GeForce 930MX]"
  Model: "Intel UHD Graphics 620"

Here are the steps I followed:
Mount my usb stick, which contained some of the contents of download.nvidia.com/opensuse/tumbleweed/x86_64/

fdisk -lmount -t vfat /dev/sdX1 /mnt
cd /mnt

After this, I uninstalled my previous driver and installed the new ones:

zypper remove nvidia-gfxG04-kmp
rpm -i nvidia-gfxG05-kmp-default-410.93_k4.20.2_1-20.1.x86_64.rpm
rpm -i nvidia-computeG05-410.93-20.1.x86_64.rpm
rpm -i nvidia-glG05-410.93-20.1.x86_64.rpm
rpm -i x11-video-nvidiaG05-410.93-20.1.x86_64.rpm
reboot

rotfl!

Nobody who could actually use this info will ever find it in “chit chat” under “community & fun”.

The organization of this forum leaves something to be desired … why isn’t there a more prominent Tumbleweed General Discussion sub-forum?

Well, if it was rewritten to be a bit more generic instead of just TW and a specific kernel, it would make a good Unreviewed FAQ, instead, IMHO. But, I do not have time to do the re-writing.

But, if the OP wishes, or if you – xorbe – would like to write it, following the correct formatting and wording guidelines – I would like to see that done.

Just asking “Why” questions doesn’t help us to improve things. But, if users come up with proposals, with proper plans, all forums staff will be glad and happy to take these into consideration.
