Cannot Access 1280x800 Resolution Even Though It's In Xorg (nVidia)

I am running 11.1 with an nVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card and I have configured the monitor and graphics card via “sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia”. My xorg shows all of the correct monitor settings and screen resolutions, yet when I go to the Display settings or nvidia-settings, it does not offer me any of the 16:10 aspect resolutions that are in the xorg.conf file.

No, those resolutions are correct - that is the resolution of the actual monitor itself. It is that many pixels wide and tall.

I’m saying that if I try to change the resolution in nvidia-settings or the Display configuration tool from gnome, it doesn’t offer me the options such as 1280x800 even though they are in the xorg.conf file.

So you don’t actually want to change to 1280x800, you just can’t see the option even though it should be there

Ha well I guess I technically do want to change to 1280x800. Mostly I just want to figure out how to enable any or all of the resolutions that are in the xorg.conf file.

Fiddle away. But take care. Only do things that have a real purpose/goal.

There is a goal. To have a resolution that is proporational to my monitor so that images are not distorted. 1280x800 is such a resolution.

Do you have an disk with the monitor? It may very well be, that the NVIDIA is doing alright, but with wrong monitor settings (Happend to my LG 24" on 11.1).
If you have one, run

‘sax2 -r -m0=nvidia’

pick Change Configuration, enter monitor’s options, insert the disk and click the disk Utility. The proper settings should be discovered, save and exit, restart X, and see what it does.
