Cannon Pixima MP140 Question

I’ve got a Cannon Pixima MP140 Multifunction Printer that I use with my Toshiba Satellite C660-15R running Windows 7 Ultimate X64 and I want to move over to Linux as I’m getting fed up of how slow Windows 7 has become, so I downloaded the Cannon Pixima MP140 Linux RPM Driver and Software packages from the Cannon Website along with the x86_64 & x86 OpenSuse 12.2 DVD iso’s and the Non OSS cd iso from the OpenSuse website.

But before I backup my HDD and take the plunge with OpenSuse I want to know how easy it is to Install the Cannon Pixima MP140 Software on OpenSuse. I’ve tried it once before on my Netbook running Ubuntu but couldn’t get the deb packages to Install so gave up?

Roland

I’ve just noticed a bug in the Cannon RPM Package, the Common Driver is in .deb format and the Device Specific Driver is in .rpm format. I’ve emailed Cannon Support about the error, but wondered if there is a way to successfully convert a .deb package into a .rpm Package?

Roland

Here are the rpm`s for the Pixma 140:

Also the Manuals can be downloaded from that side.

The last one is:
IJ Printer Driver Ver. 2.80 for Linux(rpm Common package)
Its an rpm.

Thanks. Will install the x86 version of 12.2 on the Netbook and give it a try before I give it a go on the Laptop.

Roland

Does it matter that the Instructions in the Manuals are for OpenSuse 10.3 or will following them on OpenSuse 12.2 work?

Roland

I downloaded from a different page where the drivers were packaged in a .zip and the common driver was a .deb

The link to the page you posted is better because it has the scanner drivers as well as the printer drivers.

Therefor I gave you that link.

For Canon Driver, you should search here:
Download product drivers & manuals, view FAQs and specifications - Canon Australia
(Its a little easier to search)

Also you can search here:

I’ve Installed the Common Driver but hisa little snag with the MP140 Driver I get this error when trying to Install

error: Failed dependencies:
libtiff.so.3 is needed by cnijfilter-mp140series-2.80-1.i386

Where can I find the missing dependencie for 12.2?

Roland

Where can I find the missing dependencie for 12.2?

It´s libtiff3
Index of /repositories/graphics/openSUSE_12.2
](http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/graphics/openSUSE_12.2/)
or
software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 12.2

When I run the command to Register the printer to the spooler I get this error

bash: /user/sbin/lpadmin: No such file or directory

Whatam I doing wrong. It’s so frustrating as I seem to only be advancing through the install very slowly as I seem to hit a problem every other command?

Roland

When I run the command to Register the printer to the spooler I get this error

Why don’t you use the graphical CUPS web interface to do this configuration job?

Because I’m following the Instructions that Canon Provide which only show how to do it via CLI, and I don’t know how to access the CUPS web interface.

Roland

So, once you’ve installed the ‘cnijfilter-common-2.80-1.i386.rpm’ and ‘cnijfilter-mp140series-2.80-1.i386.rpm’ packages, you can proceed to configuring your printer. Connect it, fire up you favourite browser, and navigate to

http://localhost:631/admin

Select ‘Add Printer’ and follow the prompts given. The correct model should be available to choose from, after you select ‘Canon’. Hope this helps.

Thanks. I’ll give it a try and report back.

Roland

When I try just says
