I am lazy and my fingers do not work that great so when user “dragonbite” used the abbreviation mentioned above I got excited.
I know I can use the shortened form if I want too but will it cause a bunch of grief/confusion to established or new users?
Thoughts???
>my fingers do not work that great . . . Thoughts???
i’d rather see you type oS than any of these:
OpenSuse
OpenSuSe
OpenSuSE
open suse
open SUSE
open SuSE
open SuSe
Open suse
Open SUSE
Open SuSE
Open SuSe
OS
Os
os
OSuse
etc
suse
etc
SUSE
etc
oSusie
etc
etc

I’ve used OS many times, like OS11 OS12.2 etc.
You can use any abbreviation as long as people know what you are talking
about. If you have to explain it a lot…probably not working. I’ve
not had a problem using OS so oS shouldn’t be any different, do include the
version number where applicable.
That works only when you can put a strict diciplin on everyone. I see e.g. people using OS and I never know for sure if they mean openSUSE or Operating System or Open Source. I would rather see no abreviations at all. When you have a problem, please take the time to formulate carefully and extensive. Misunderstandings are easy to achieve when, like here, you are not face to face and do not have the same first language.

I think oS is clear, although with the potential for ambiguity with OS. I name the files of my virtual machines thus:
oS12.3_x86_64_XFCE. Anything less is insufficent I think.
lol!lol! Looks like you have been collecting those for a couple of days now.
I use oS all the time, no one ever complained or misunderstood AFAIK.
I will not complain wen sombody does do it, but that does not mean that I likle it. It stops for a very short moment the easy reading, setting a subprocess off in my brains to quickly look up the possibilities of the meaning.
Isn’t OpenSuSE redundant?

redundant, no.
but what is OpenSuSE? there is no such thing, and never has
been…there has been all of these
S.u.S.E.
SuSE
SUSE
openSUSE
but never has there been any of these:
openSuSE
OpenSUSE
OpenSuSE
etc

Actually suse was prefixed with the word , “open” as a joke, because many of the more overzealous users on this board are the opposite of “open” as in “open minded”, and thus appear as “closed minded” as anyone from the boardrooms of CEO land, including our good friend, Steve “Mr. Linux” Ballmer.

Do you have a reference for that, or is it just your opinion?

I don’t care for any of that rant.
There is a commercial product named SUSE, and there is a non commercial,
community produced distribution whose name is openSUSE. Any other way of
writing it is simply wrong and not accepted.

OS is operating system.
OSS is open source.
oS is openSUSE.
I try to use them only in context after using the full word earlier.

OSS is open source.
Almost - Open source software

Same here.

i’ve been around here for a while and have absolutely no idea who you
might be referring to as those who as ‘closed minded’!
quite the contrary–as, most of the volunteer helpers readily suggest
to “use what works for you” (whether that be openSUSE, SUSE Linux,
Red Hat, Ubuntu, Windows, Mac OSX or whatever)
which is not nearly as closed as is our friend Mr Steve.
sure, there may be a few so inclined…but they are mostly the
fringe (with an immature view of the “IT World”) and certainly do NOT
lead this community.

I do care. Getting help here depends on the undebatable information provided by an OP (originating poster). Most of the first couple of replies in a thread ask for such.
BTW: it’s the first time I see “lazyness” mentioned as a valid reason for developping protocols/mode of conduct.
Just think of it as “efficiency” and it will become a much more valid mode of conduct. BTW, I did also mention my crippled fingers.
I donno maybe some joke off or OSS but the E has got me puzzled.

Basic rule of thumb: Be clear in your communications. If you feel “oS” is
clear enough, then by all means, go ahead and try it. If people don’t
understand you, they’ll ask for clarification.
I don’t think anyone here has ever been shy about saying “I don’t know
what you’re talking about”.
