Can scan network, but don't see anything

Hi,

I think i’ve installed my wireless device correctly with ndiswrapper.
When I go to Yast–> Network devices → network. I see 2 devices, which one of them is wlan0.

When I push the button ‘scan network’ it stays blank after scanning. what could be the problem??
I’ve tried the sticky’s…but they don’t help me. in step 4 when I use iwlist scan i get:

Wlan0 - Interface doesn’t support scanning: Network is down.

I’m using OpenSuse 11.1
Here are a few outputs:
-rcnetwork restart:
wlan0 has unknown interface type.

Didn’t I succees in installing the windows driver?
What should I do next? how do I get the old one back?

hmm, a few bits missing.
1 ) what sort of device do you have ?
2 ) what UI are you using ?
3 ) if you are using the windows driver with ndiswrapper, did you select ndiswrapper in the modules section ?
4 )make sure the device is set to external for the firewall
5 ) ensure ipv6 is disabled
6 ) make sure device is set to come up at boot time & ethernet to on cable connect
7 ) most importantly, doesn’t the device have native linux drivers ?

Andy

Thanks for your reply,

sorry, forgot to post it.
It’s a PCI wireless device.
03:06.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek semiconductor Co., ltd. RTL-8185 IEEE 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev20)

I probably did something, but now it can find my router when i push the button scan networks
(It used to say that it was not connected, but now the ‘not connected’ message is gone)

So I think I’m connected right now, but I can’t get on the internet yet.

step 2: My UI is Linux OpenSuse 11.1 x86-64bits.

I’m not sure about step 3, because I don;t know what to do there. But when I can see my router, this step is irrelevant?

step4: I’ve set Wlan0 in firwall into the external zone.

setp 5:Is ipv6 same as DHCP6?
I’ve got dynamic IP adress by DHCP (Both versions, 4and6)

step 6:Wlan starts on startup, ethernet is disabled (never going to use cable on this pc for now)

step7: It’s a SWEEX wireless PCI device. SWEEX does not have any software for Linux with their wireless devices.

Did I miss anything to mention??
Thanks for your help!

Maybe this helps:

by typing: iwconfig wlan0
Wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID: ‘my router name’
Mode: managed frequency 2.437 Acces Point: Not-Associated
Tx-power=27dBm
Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2352 B
Encryption key: xxxxxxxxxx (my key to router 128bit)
Security mode: open
Power management: off
Link quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid music:0 Missed beacon:0

Don’t really know what it means. is this a ‘good thing’??

Hope you can help me.

Mode: managed frequency 2.437 Access Point: Not-Associated

this says to me it’s a configuration error.click on network manager, select new connection, select wireless device & fill in the details.at the end select save not save and connect. then click on network manager, select your router/essid & you should be able to connect.IPV6 is different from dhcp, you deselect it under the global options. see if that works

Andy

Andy, your the man!!

haha, it works noW!
I added a new connection, which the computer called wlan1, set up just a few thing. Pushed OK, and when I went back to the overview wlan1 was GONE. From here wlan0 start working and my internet is up and running. perfect! dont exactly know how…but…it’s working!

I appreciate your help, thanks once again!

Hi Andy,

are you still there?

Well, after 1 day my problem has come back again. It seems that I can’t get an access point, while when I scan the network, I CAN find my router. Key is also OK, because it worked before.

I copied iwconfig :
iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

I’ve installed the drivers correct for this wireless device. How can this be? Yesterday it was working! although, my connection was very poor, and it constantly lost connection.
Everytime reconnection. surfing the webpages went OK, but VERY slow.

Can you help me once again?

By the way, I did your steps you told me above. I can’t create a ‘new wireless’ connection (called wlan1) because it does not know which device it should use. Can’t select this anywhere.
It’s a bit different in openSuse 11.1

Hope to hearing from you soon.

hmm, just been thinking, there is a linux driver for this device. you can find it here Realtek
also, try compat-wireless, might be able to solve it
Andy

Hi,

thanks for your advise. I’ve downloaded the package…and there are a lot of files!

I can’t seem to ‘make’ while i am in SU-mode.
I can’t install anything…weird!

Here’s a copy of the error [when typing MAKE in root mode]:

**make[1]: map ‘/usr/src/linux-2.6.27.7-9-obj/x86_64/default’ is being entered.

make[1]: *** There is no rule to make target ‘modules’. Stopt.

make[1]: map ‘/usr/src/linux-2.6.27.7-9-obj/x86_64/default’ is being left.

make: *** [all] Fault 2**

Could this be a problem with the driver i’ve just downloaded?

Hope to hearing from you soon.

ensure you have gcc/gcc++,kernel sources & make installed. it compiled no problem on my machine. Also, try the compat-wireless driver if it still fails

Andy

Andy,

I’ve got all the packaged installed [already] so that’s not the problem. ****…
Any other way?

where can I find the compat wireless? also on Realtek? can’t find it.

Hope to hearing from you soon [again…sorry!]

Jan

bokmark this for future use Webpin  & you’ll find compat-wireless Webpin
BTW, are you 32bit or 64bit ?

Andy

Hi,

I have Linux OpenSuse 11.1 x86-64bits.

thanks for the link! I’ll try it now.

Well Andy,

I’m a very happy man right now! just installed the webpin & compat-wireless, and this seems to solve all my problems!
My wireless internet is working now! Thanks for helping me!

My average download speed is about 84.1 KByte/sec
When I’m wired it can go up to 800 KByte/sec (just tried)

Can there be something that slows the wireless down?
In firefox, i’ve got network.dns.disableIPv6 = TRUE
(so it’s not that I guess…)

Excellent, glad you got it sorted, now enjoy
lots of things slow down wireless:-

microwave
cordless phones
cell phones
halogen lights
xmas tree lights
etc,etc,etc

try a different channel, that sometimes helps as well.i.e. do a scan & see what channels the neighbours are using & pick a channel with the least users.See if that helps. Also, disable ipv6 globally
