Can only read/mount a CD with root user!

No. It starts up KsCD but nothing shows up. It just stays empty.

So KsCD starts, but does not play an audio CD. You did not say if you have more than one Optical Drive installed?

Thank You,

Sorry, no I only have one.

So I am certain at this point that I would consider doing a clean install of openSUSE 11.4, as opposed to an upgrade. If you have maintained a separate /home partition, do not format it, but only mount it. That way, all settings are maintained, though you must reload all applications that you used before. This really works as even your old desktop comes back, wallpaper and all. I do install some items not included in the standard install, like Asunder (for CD ripping) and the icon will still be on the desktop, but it does not work until I install Asunder again, after the clean install of openSUSE. If we can assume your Optical CD drive is not defective or full of dust, this is what I would consider. Now the last two items (bad drive and full of dust) have both occurred to me and worth considering.

Thank You,

Thanks. I might install 11.4 I’ll have to look more into that.

As for dust/bad drive - that makes no sense. If I log in as root (or rather use Super User Dolphin) I can read the audio CD no problem. It’s only as non-root that I have an issue. It makes no sense that dust or a bad drive would cause this.

I don’t know for sure, but when things don’t make sense on a lot of things, its just time to reload. I do wish you luck and sorry we never got to the bottom of what was wrong.

Thank You,

I have seen PolicyKit cause problems like that. Sometimes a cold iron
reboot after editing permissions helps.
