Can not play x265 files

I installed the codec packages via this guide, minus vlc-codecs as it was already installed and also mpv and smplayer, however the moment I load a x265 encoded video I get a black screen. Is there something missing?

The only thing I ever did since years on end (not withstanding all sorts of guides that tell you to install individual packages from Packman) is the Vendor Switch to Packman.

While it could be that you try to play some codec I never used, until now I never had a codecs problem.

The Vendor Switch can be done through YaST > Software > Software Management; then from the View menu: Packages; then at left select the Packman repo; now just above the packages list at right there is: Switch system packages to the …; click on that.

Or it can be done:

zypper dup --from <Packman>

where you have to replace <Packman> by the Alias or Name of the Packman repo as defined in your system.

There is nothing against repeating this if in doubt if it is done before.

You need libx265-209 or/and gstreamer-plugins-bad-codecsfrom Packman, depending on the player you are using.

thanks. I’ll try and see

Problem solved after switching to pacman. It downloaded the proper codecs and now videos play.

thank you both

As usual. It is such an easy thing to do and when you browse through old threads here you will see it helped in 99% of the cases.

Nice it works now. Enjoy openSUSE.

I don’t know what happened but during system update all the old vlc, mpv and codecs with missing decoders and inferior performance were installed again.

I removed mpv and vlc and resorted to the flatpak version. At least I’ll know it will not change out of nowhere.

That doesn’t happen “out of nowhere”…
Occasionally Packman is misaligned with the main repos, but when that happens you are asked if you want to “replace package with xxx from OSS repo” or “Keep obsolete xxx from Packman” or the like, unless you have a broken list of repos or wrong zypper config of course…

this can be very confusing as I have to choose amid dozens of updated, replaced and obsolete packages. Anyway, problem solved
