Getting multiple notices from kPackageKit that there’s are updates available, mostly related to multimedia libraries and wxcam. Previously I accepted similar updates, but they appeared again. SourceForge says wxcam was last updated in June 2011. Used Yast/software/on-line update to confirm these updates, but Yast shows no patches needed.
Normally I’m an optimist, but with computers and software I’m a bit more suspicious. Any info about phoney repositories, hijacked repo’s, etc.?
packagekit will not only notify you about an update when a patch is
available and is not equivalent to using Yast online update.
It will also tell you that an update for a package is available when it
has been just rebuilt in the repository (and packages can be triggered
to be rebuilt without having themselves any change because of some
dependency of it which has been updated or rebuilt).
Most people here seem to not like packagekit and its frontends due to
some flaky behavior (I do not know if its really most people here, since
I have no proper way to count that) and do not use it.

no, it is not a cracker crawling into your machine, instead package kit
is broken in the way you describe…(actually, some say it is ok, but
it just does not play well with the openSUSE built in tools)
i suggest, and many others here (who frequently help folks) suggest to
either right click on and disable the kpackagekit icon in the panel, or
just use YaST Software Management (or zypper) to uninstall it…(it was
uninstalled in my 11.4 a LONG time ago, and 11.3 before that…)
then, use YaST Online Update (or “zypper --patch”) occasionally (some
folks say weekly, i do it once a day) to achieve the same update that
kpackagekit is trying but failing to do smoothly/correctly…
search the forums and you will find numerous posts on this…or wait for
others to chime in…

“patches” are not the same thing as “updates”. There may be one type
available and not the other.
Yast online update only uses patches, and patches are only available from
the updates repo.

I’ve turned off kPackageKit by unchecking all the repositories under config. It doesn’t appear in system/run level, so I’m not sure what starts it. Will uninstall via Yast.
Thanks to you all.

That disables the repos, not packagekit. And if done properly, it will also
have disabled the repos for yast and zypper, so you will have to add them
again.

Yes.
