Can I use a debian package?

Hi Malcolm,
I tried to run KinskyDesktop in console and the result on screen was worse than using the selection from gui. I have however streams of info which are too long for posting here. I cannot find the instructions for uploading to cloud so please let me know how. BTW I get different messages if I run as me or as root. Which would be more help to you?
Will try sudo version below:-

:~> sudo KinskyDesktop

Hi
It doesn’t need to run as root user, I get the GUI up but I don’t have a device. I do have a twonky media server running on another system though.
Screenshot here:-SUSE Paste

Hi Malcolm,
Thanks for the SUSE Paste link and the screen shot of your Kinsky Desktop. I can get the same screen but alas it doesn’t work.
Can you see the Twonky server if you select library?

Yesterday I first tried running from console and received errors which is why I tried running it as sudo but still had errors.
Today I tried running again from console and the KinskyDesktop came up as yours but none of the controls work. Furthermore I cannot close the Kinsky Desktop, I can only get rid of it by closing the console. If I run it using KDE gui I have to restart to get rid of it.
There is a debug screen I can call up by right clicking on the Kinsky screen but darned if I can copy and paste it to your SUSE Paste site or even here! Also nothing much appears wrong except that all the plugins are loaded and I would rather them not until I get things working. I shall keep trying but did the error narrative in my last post mean anything to you?
Regards,
Budgie2

Hi Malcolm,
I thought there might be a connection problem so I fiddled with the NAS NFS share permissions and firewall and Twonky clients. I think it was the latter which I changed to Linn DS Control point as type which enabled Kinsky to see Twonky. So things are working.
Many thanks for all your help. I shall report progress in due course.
Regards,
Budgie2

Hi Malcolm,
There has been one unforseen consequence of al this. My installation of vlc which I used to play .flv videos has broken. Just get a black screen and no sound but an error message to update alsa-lib.
Strange. I shall go to old-pcu instructions and check my multimedia installation but it had been trouble free for a while.
If you can think of possble causes please let me know.
Regards
Budgie2

Strange indeed. Have a look through the zypper log to see what’s been installed.

The file is;

less /var/log/zypp/history

Hi Malcolm,
The log has 3600 lines of stuff. This includes my subsequent 1 click reinstall of multimedia. There is nothing I can recognise as being out of place, however today vlc is working again. I also received a security question when I started vlc about vlc sending info which I opted not to do. It then ran correctly so all is OK for the time being, thanks.

Now back to KinskyDesktop.
Regards,
Budgie2

Hi Malcolm, after all your work above more than a year ago I never did get Kinskydesktop working reliably. Since then everything has changed. My system is now as follows:-
OS: Linux 3.1.10-1.16-default i686
System: openSUSE 12.1 (i586)
KDE: 4.7.2 (4.7.2) “release 5”

With your help recently I have installed Leia ds and it works well but only with firewall off. Even with the correct ports open Leiads does not see my UPnP devices although UPnP-Inspector does. I wonder if there is a problem with how Leiads does the searching.

Meanwhile there is a more recent version of Kinsky but still only a Debian package:- DownloadKinsky – Linn Open Source Software. Would you be able to help me install this on my system like you did before with the earlier version. I understand this version is reasonably stable and probably overcomes the firewall issue more effectively. Grateful for your advice.
Regards,
Budgie
