can I replace my bios with coreboot?

I read about coreboot and I like that it’s open source as well as fast: [Phoronix] Google Is One Of The Biggest Backers Of Coreboot](http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTI4Mzk)

can I actually replace my bios with this, or is that not possible without manufacturer support?

i have no idea for two reasons:

  1. you give no hint of your hardware, nor if you checked the the list
linked to in the article, and found your exact hardware listed as supported.

  2. i know it is possible (VERY possible) to turn a well running consumer
level computer into a brick (aka: door stop, since it will never be a
‘computer’ again) by installing a new BIOS, even with manufacturer
    support.

for me: i wouldn’t try to load Coreboot into a machine i wasn’t ready to
send to the recycler (or use as a door stop)…

Correct me if i am wrong but doesn’t BIOS’s job end when it passes control to GRUB. Most of the time i don’t even notice the BIOS screen. How can we ever make this faster and if it is faster will a human be able to react and change boot device(F11 or something) within a millisecond or something :frowning: As it is i am finding it very hard to change settings in BIOS as it moves away in an instant.
