Can I install opensuse on a blank hard ?

Hi. I have a desktop which came with Windows 8 installed.
I want to load opensuse on a blank hard drive without
Windows 8 being installed. Is this possible?

Thanks

I’m not sure what that “without Windows 8 being installed” part is supposed to mean.

I purchased a new computer last February, with Windows 8 pre-installed. I then purchased a second hard drive, and installed that. And then I installed opensuse 12.3 on that second hard drive.

If that is what you are asking, yes that can be done.

Your system probably came with UEFI, and you might run into some quirks with that newer firmware, as support is uneven across vendors.

My pc only has room for one hard drive. I do not want to dual boot with windows 8 so i erased the hard drive.
(not one of the smartest things I have done). Now I want to install opensuse on the empty hard drive. All I
can find refers to dual booting, which I do not want to do. Is this possible or will I have to reinstall windows 8.
Being as how i did not want to save windows 8 i got in a hurry and did not make a restore disk.

I would have made a copy.

Yes, of course it is possible. As it is the easiest method, what you
find in questions is about people having problems with double boot
Windows and Linux.

Just boot the Linux installation media (DVD, usb stick) and follow the
instructions.

It may still be possible - as long as you have not written anything. YOu
need another computer to get an unformat utility disk, then use that on
your computer.

Am I correct in assuming secure boot should be enabled ?

The last laptop I installed (came with windows seven with secure boot
extensions) I did something similar and nuked the various partitions and
added openSUSE 12.3 x86_64. The system is still setup for secure boot so
that part seems to be working. Unless you want to disable it, try it with
it in place.

Good luck.

Thanks to everyone who has replied.
One more question (i hope just one more)
Will I need to do extra formatting or will the
install disk be ok?

Install disk should be ok. Be sure the grub2-efi is the selected boot and that if you are using secure that that box is checked. Also there should be an additional FAT formatted partition for the efi boot. It should be mounted as /boot/efi I think. Note except for the secure boot check mark all the other things should be auto-magic, but I listed so you know what to check.
