I have up to date 12.3-32 installed on a Pentium 4 desktop with lxde. My preference for alternate applications has been toward kde and now for a digital camera problem I have installed dolphin and kio-slave.
pcmanfm is my default file manager with lxde. dolphin doesn’t work well with it. So, how nice it would be if /usr/bin/exo-preferred-applications could take care of a file manager change for me!
Google seems to think replacing most any default file manager with dolphin is like backing up a train without the track. There are a number of file manager changeovers on the web, but none that I’ve found for dolphin.
In /usr/bin there are several of these exo apps. What are they for?

Dolphin heavily depends on KDE, so will need a lot of KDE’s libs. Doesn’t LXDE have a setting where one can set default apps (KDE does have such a setting, but I doubt LXDE respects that.
I don’t know the “exo” apps, nor what they do, they’re not installed, though KDE, GNOME, LXDE all are.
I do have the kde apps I like installed: k3b, gwenview, okular, and now dolphin. Lxde does allow the setting of default apps on an individual basis like gwenview for jpg and png, etc.
Then there are things the lxde reponse to a blank media which pops up a nautilus burner. Similarly the digital camera in ptp mode mounts the camera memory as a usb drive. The lxde pcmanfm can find the camera files, but copying them is broke.
dolphin doesn’t see the “mounted” camera usb drive, but it can get the camera files with kio-slave that I have installed. With dolphin, I can drag camera files between dolphin instances, but not to an instance of pcmanfm.
What I had hoped to find was an app that would globally change the necessary settings to transplant one default file manager for another.
On the web people have written scripts that attempt the file manager conversion, but the dolphin version is missing or coming next.
What I have now works. Guess another alternative is to install kde as an alternate desktop. Probably I’ll stick with what I have now. Heboland.

Copy the files with dolphin to some directory, and then point pcmanfm to

Yes, that’s what I’m doing now and it works.
If it had been an easy get to change the default file manager, it would have saved some duplication of effort. Now turning the camera on pops up a pcmanfm that I don’t need. Instead I have to manually start two instances of dolphin to move pictures to the directory where pcmanfm can access them.
Occasionally I can do a camera picture transfer between pcmanfm instances, but typically not more than one. The next transfer attempt will hang.
The two other 12.3 desktops I have elsewhere are similarly configured with lxde. Both were up to date a month ago when I left them. Dragging camera pictures between pcmanfm instances worked flawlessly on them when I left them behind.
Your suggested method is adequate for me. Heboland.

Well, good.
How about extracting the card from the camera, did you try that method?
I had to use it with my camera till it was supported.

But you could hit other problems with other things. Perhaps automount.
