Can anyone recommend a modem for dial-up?

Hi -

In a week or so I will be traveling to a place where internet is available only through dial-up. :’(

The last time I was there I reached the most unfortunate conclusion that the winmodem in my dell laptop simply cannot be made to work (I tried pretty hard; I did get it to connect once, but not a second time, and it really screwed up alsa).

So - I need an external modem. Recommendations? Thanks!

PS. I use SuSE 11.0 x86_64 with gnome, compiz-fusion, nvidia, on a Dell D820 laptop.

Hi
Do you have a cellphone? You may also wish to have a look at

Linux drivers for Conexant
chipsets
you can get a trial key for 30 days.

openSUSE 11.0 x86 Kernel 2.6.25.11-0.1-default

GPU GeForce 6600 TE/6200 TE - Driver Version: 173.14.12

Thanks. I tried the linuxant drivers last time. The result was less than acceptable.

I do have a cell phone, but that doesn’t help. This is amusing:

The place that I am traveling to is Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. The hotel that I stay at there has internal dialup, meaning that you connect your modem to the phone and dial an internal number to connect. I have traveled the world, and this is the strangest internet solution I have seen.

I need a working modem.

I actually carry a Windows laptop with me when I travel as well, and in principle I could share the dial-up connection through a cross-over cable or wireless. But I have a policy against relying on the Windows laptop.

have you looked here HCL/Modems - openSUSE ?

Andy

Thanks! That’s a good start.
