Can 12.3 be installed on live 12.1 system?

Or do I need to reinstall everything? I have now tried it 3-4 times and looks like cant be done…wont even boot up. Luckily have backup on my raid so needed to clean install back to 12.1 and restore.

there are three recommended and supported ways to ‘upgrade’ (rather
than “installed on”) from one version to another…the first two
listed below can only be upgraded one step at a time…that is, to
go from 12.1 to 12.3 you would need to upgrade in steps, like 12.1 to
12.2, then fully update 12.2 (with YaST Online Update), then move
from 12.2 to 12.3…

the last of those three can be used to attempt to move up by more
than one version at a time…

but, i tell you all of that for NEXT time, because i would be very
surprised if you could recapture a system (probably damaged by “tried
it 3-4 times” some way(s) other than the the ways listed above.)

well, i am sure that i couldn’t help you do it successfully recover
from where i sit…and, i’m not sure i could do it if i could sit at
your keyboard without just doing a full, complete format and fresh
install of 12.3 and then rebuild the system and run the data you have
saved (hopefully to an off machine location) back into your new system.

on the other hand, there may be dozens of folks here who might be
able to save the format/install/move data steps that i would use if i
could sit at your keyboard…so, give the a chance to jump in here!!

Tnx for helping. Actually tried the way in 1st link 2 times. Upgrade got stuck both times in about half way thru. Basically looks like link 2 advicing same way.

What I havent tried is to goto 12.2 first and then from there to 12.3. Maybe that the only way to do it. I do have lamp, 15 domains running on pc + bit modified system as of all server software, so maybe one reason why doesent upgrade ‘nicely’.

Good to have daily full backups so can allways do a clean 12.1 install and restore

no! if you did not go from 12.1 to 12.2 then you did not follow the
“1st link” because in it i read:

The supported starting point is the last openSUSE release with all
current updates applied. . . The following steps will show you how to
upgrade your openSUSE distribution to the following release (eg. 12.2
-> 12.3).

so, to start an upgrade to 12.3 you must be running a fully updated
12.2, or use the method laid out in my third link.

in any case, none of the upgrade methods are perfect, in order the
three note:

“. . . due to some third-party packages and the myriad of possible
configurations, it is possible for some combinations to cause failure
upon upgrade . . .”

“. . . Depending on your customizations, some steps (or the entire
upgrade procedure) may fail . . .”

“. . . it is to be considered a “best effort”: it should work, but it
can also fail . . .”

on the other hand, your recent description “I do have lamp, 15
domains running on pc + bit modified system as of all server
software” might mean you maybe should take a close look at the
manhours saved in shutting down every year to do an upgrade or
format/instal and rebuild of the system–and pick an operating system
with a longer life span, like maybe SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.
