Buying a laptop exclusively for Linux:

Heyas,

I’m in the market for a linux laptop and I"ll be using opensuse 12.3(MATE) on it.

I’ll have around 1500 to spend on it but I want a dynamite system.

Thinkpenguin and Zareason have gotten my attention, so has System76 but I’ve read too many bad reviews.

I am also considering a thinkpad as well. I’m looking to have at least 1900xres 8-12 gb of ram, 700gb 7200 rpm drive with a 256+ ssd.
Niceties are good but non proprietary drivers are even better.

Let me know what you think.

I’m by no means an expert, but I have never had a problem installing openSUSE on any Toshiba laptop I’ve owned.

Replacing the sorry hard drive that comes with most laptops with an SSD goes a long way in making it sizzle!

12.3 is going away pretty soon. Are you stuck with that version for some reason?

If you can go someplace that has the models you’re interested in for
sale, take a bootable flash drive and test it. That’s what I did before
I bought my last laptop, and I ended up with a pretty good find for what
I needed (it’s a Dell N7110, Intel video).
