Burning DVD

Hi!

Because downloading via ftp://suse.inode.at ended up in wrong MD5 sums (though I still don’t know how this can haapen, because TCP itself normally should provide safe transmissions), I finally downloaded with BitTorrent, which was quite odd, because it downloaded with only 89 KB/sec average speed, though my Internet connection would download about 500 KB/sec (which it actaully did in case of FTP). Finally I burned the image on a quality DVD+R, using the command “cdrecord dev=/dev/cdrecorder speed=44 driveropts=burnproof -eject -v isofile” as suggested on Download Help - openSUSE. However, although in the “Microsoft Windows” section this page claims you should burn with DAO, the -dao argument isn’t specified here and indeed, cdrecord used TAO. But it seemed to burn error free. But if I put the DVD into my drive, Windows says “Unavailable function” if I try to open it using Explorer, and Ubuntu thinks it is an empty DVD. The DVD can be booted from, but the dosc check fails with a message, that the wrong DVD is in the drive.

Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong? Is it an error of my drive, of my BIOS, of the disc (Sony), should I throw the disc away and burn again using the -dao command line switch?

Any helpful hints appreciated.

Greetings,

Michael

Ig the later doesn’t work OK, then I’d be looking into the hardware. A quick
test could be trying to burn from within Windows, if that works, it’s not
HW related.

It seems that cdrecord - at least the version shipped with Ubuntu server or Xubuntu - does not work quite well. I tried to record to a DVD-RW which worked, but writing to a DVD+R always fails, although cdrecord says everything would be okay. After you burned your DVD, you notice that it can be booted, but not mounted, neither in Windows, nor in Ubuntu. However, I transfered the ISO images to another computer and burned them using Nero - in Windows XP. Ironicaly, I need Windows to burn Linux…
