Most building automation systems have been proprietary and hardware still tends to use embeded software which requires windoze interface. I am looking for simple PLC control hardware and associated software which uses open systems in order to build a small system for home use. Does anybody have any suggestions please?
Looking at the Wikipedia article on the subject I suspect that there are few FOSS options because the standards largely assume legacy hardware. I suspect that a Raspberry Pi could easily be programmed to do what most of them do but you would need an understanding of the logic behind what the PLC does to create a successful alternative.

https://www.openmotics.com/ is one I ran across on Slashdot a couple
weeks ago - looks interesting. Open hardware schematics and software.

Vera smart home control is linux based. http://getvera.com/
The above link is to more than just sales. The support forums contain very good information about how to implement various portions of home automation and has links to projects you can build (many based on raspberry pi).
