first, Alt+Ctrl+Backspace is NOT a log-out, instead it is a
combination which KILLS X-windows instantly, the SECOND time it is
given (used to be the first time…i have NO idea who in SUSE decided
it should be twice)…so, with openSUSE 11.0 and later:

hold down Alt and Ctrl and press backspace TWICE to KILL X…

but to log out, switch users or DE, etc: why don’t you just right
click the desktop and then click “Log Out” and then choose from “End
current session” (to switch users, and maybe log into Gnome or Xfce);
or “Turn off Computer”; or “restart computer” etc…

It tells X (xorg) to quit instantly and all applications on top of it will
be killed, which usually leads to problems on next login, as none of
applications running at that moment can save any data, close files, save its
status.

Ctrl-ALt-Backspace is emergency option, similar in effects to computer power
down using power switch. It should be used only when the regular log out
doesn’t work for some reason (screen frozen).

Because killing Xorg can have bad consequences, the Xorg guys added this
feature.

After first Ctrl-ALt-Backspace you hear beep as warning that you are trying
to shoot yourself in the foot, if you press Ctrl-ALt-Backspace for the
second time within a second after first then Xorg is restarted.

People will sometimes try Ctrl-Alt-Backspace perhaps in an attempt to send a Ctrl-Alt-Del to a program… perhaps a virtual machine console running
something like Windows. In VMware, you’d do Ctrl-Alt-KeypadDel to do that. I imagine that people that tried Ctrl-Alt-Backspace were rudely surprised
before when their X11 went bye bye… so now you get a beep warning and if issued twice, it kills the server.

yes ok,
but why does suse logout instantly besides that control alt del,

im working on something,

oops logout??
i did not tutch anything???

That could be different problem.

Graphic card driver crash, desktop crash, too little memory (RAM+swap) which
triggers kernel mechanism to find memory for new started application by
killing first “not needed” that will free enough space for the new one.

There was bug in some earlier opensuse version that would crash Xorg when
used with older Nvidia drivers, but only if application would request 3D.
That bug is fixed for a long time.

So to help you debug issue we should know much more about you graphic card,
used driver, used desktop (KDE or GNOME), used RAM and swap. If you don’t
know how to get all that, let us know.

Nice thing with well interconnected desktop (applications) is that user is
very comfortable when it works, but when something goes down, then you can
have ripple effect, taking down whole desktop.

may also be caused by:

-CPU overheat (maybe needs heat sink cleaned, or new thermal
paste…is the fan turning?)

-graphics processing unit overheat (maybe turn off compiz, desktop
effects, etc…maybe need new heat transfer paste, maybe need larger
heat sink, maybe need fan on heat sink)

-motherboard overheat (can come from several things)

-cracked motherboard

-loose/intermittent ground (to or on motherboard)

-weak/failing/overtaxed power supply unit

ok tnks for that awnser,

it’s a crappy pc but my own is at the shop for repair,

so when i place this harddisk whit opensuse 11.1 in that pc it should be ok than!

it is not usually easy (or maybe even possible) to move a hard disk
from one machine to another…

or example the computer the HD is in now might have intel graphics
and that is what the system loads every time…now, the new one might
have nVidia…but, the HD ‘remembers’ to load the driver for an intel
graphics chip…AND alll the other drivers needed for the OLD machine…

see?
