Buffer I/O error on device sdb5, logical block 0 on JMicron JM20336 SATA, USB Combo

Hi

I have a IDE drive in a JMicron JM20336 SATA/IDE, USB Combo external drive case which worked well as long as running under opensuse 11.1. Then I upgraded to 11.3 the device does not get recognized properly any longer and I get the following entries in /var/log/messages (see below).

Just to check that it is not the drive or the case I

  • replaced the HDD with one of the same brand and type under 11.3 -> failure
  • used the replaced HDD with the case under Windows XP -> worked
  • used the original HDD with a 11.1 Live CD -> worked
  • tried the original HDD again with 11.3 -> failure

Does anyone have the same HDD enclosure (digitus DA-70585 Rev.1-0) running with 11.3?
Did anyone have the same issue (with that enclosure/chipset/external HDD?
Did anyone have similar problems?
What did you do against it?

Anyone any ideas what to do?

I would appreciate any help or should I just go and buy me a new external HDD, since it is my backup drive that has not been sync’d for weeks now?

As info: I posted the issue to bugzilla.novell.com: Bug #639042

I am getting something very similar. I have a setup with a SATA drive in a la-cie external enclosure connected via usb.
Tried both ext3 and ext4 filesystems but after running for a few minutes (time varies) I get buffer I/O errors and the filesystem is mounted readonly. Works fine with Ubuntu 9.03 (kernel 2.6.28.

This (error) is with stock openSuSE kernel vmlinuz-2.6.34.7-0.3-default.

You two should report in Bugzilla.
