Looking for a better tool than spreadsheets to manage our family budget.

I’ve done some digging on SourceForge for a package that would work on our
home network / intranet.

Looking for the following:

operating system - Linux … I plan to install the app in a VM

open database - MySQL or PostgreSQL

user interface - browser based for easy access & usable by non-CPA types

capabilities

  • capture account transactions (hopfully by importing a .csv file)
  • generate spending reports with graphs
  • budget projections with graphs

Maybe there is some other feature that I’m over looking here … open to
suggestions.

GnuCash doesn’t meet the above requirements.

You have very high requirements for a family budget; I manage both my family and my business budget with much less demanding requirements and entirely to my accountant’s satisfaction. You should probably start with Comparison of accounting software - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thanks for the feedback. This comparison page is providing me a great place
to start.

I did find two possible solutions.

http://www.ledgersmb.org/ … looks decent, but there has not been any news
in over a year, plus after reading this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LedgerSMB I have some reservations.

NolaPro might have been an option except that it only works on Windows. :frowning:

PostBooks looks good & is highly regarded on SourceForge, but it may be
overkill.

Try DueMon CashAllot. This is online service at UnixDime Home
I believe this is exactly what you need.
You may use it either for free in trial mode or for small monthly fee in service mode. Trial mode is fully functional and has no time limit.
