Hi all,
It’s been a while since the last time I printed in Ledger (11"x17") and legal (8.5x14") size.
I have a drawing that needs to be printed in legal or ledger size but anything I do it prints in letter size (8.5"x11")
Appreciate any help in this problem.

I am using tumbleweed with xfce 4.20.
The applications I tried to print are gimp, ristretto and ksnip.
We have a new epson and hp printer but it can’t come closer to the quality that this brother printer can achieve.
This brother prints almost if not perfect very much looks like the original color of the image that appears in my monitor.
Could you show us
lpstat -p -d and lpoptions -p <printer-name> -l output.
Also, what application are you printing from?
If Legal is shown by CUPS but the application still submits the job as Letter, you can try printing directly like this…
lp -d <printer-name> -o media=Legal <test-file>
Any different? (Just trying to understand if an application or CUPS job processing issue.)
Which driver do you use?
egrep -i "|name|model|filter" /etc/cups/ppd/*
(This will spit out ppd information for all currently configured printers.)

Ok, so we’ve eliminated an application-specific issues. What file did you use for testing? A JPEG?
Try specifying page size explicitly…
lp -d MFC5890CN -o PageSize=Legal <image-file>
Just to clarify further, when you say it still prints in Letter size, does the printer actually feed a Letter (8.5×11) sheet, or does it feed a Legal (8.5×14) sheet but the image is still laid out as Letter?
For the command lp -d MFC5890CN -o PageSize=Legal <image-file>It didn’t work. The result is the same.
To confirm my printer setup. It feeds a legal size (8.5x14) but print in letter size, the same as the image I posted in my first post.
I already change the printer configuration in the brother printer physical set up to default in legal size. The tray is aligned in the legal size accordingly.
The paper tray feeder has specific adjustments for different kinds of paper size to use in printing.
I already tried printing in jpeg and png.

Does scaling with “fit-to-page” help?

Nothing work. I search the net also and there was one topic saying to change the default paper size in /etc/ups/ppd/brother_model.ppd (in my case MFC5890CN.ppd) by hand. According to that topic it’s a brother printer bug, t didn’t work.
One thing I notice in the MFC890CN.PPD , there is a line that says like so:

I tried changing it to true but still no go.

I would like to mention also that the Brother rpm diver package install in tumbleweed but can’t be detected.
it fails to build the needed ppd file. The one that work is their linux-brprinter-installer which tumbleweed detect the printer and scanner and work but it spit warning also during install. Below is from the installer

Edit: Forget 2 I couldn’t get this to work interactively (I have a an old DCP-7055 laser printer model and brprintconflsr3 installed).

So I opened the /usr/local/Brother/Printer/mfc5890cn/inf/brmfc5890cnrc.
Though the brother printer is physically configured to legal paper as default and the system configuration is set legal paper as default and the application to print the image is set to legal size, the brmfc5890cnrc is set to letter size paper.
I change the brmfc5890cnrc to default to legal size paper and did a test print and the result is as expected. It printed in legal size.
Downside of this is I have to manually change to letter size or ledger(tabloid) by hand just to get the proper printed result .
A t least I can still use this old printer for some especial type of printing.

Here is the printed image result in legal size
Note that the drawing was printed in legal size but it printed in letter size which you can see that it was cut almost a quarter of the legal paper lenght.
The black bold line on top of the image that extend from end to end of the legal size paper is the result of the test print after changing the paper size in brmfc5890cnrc.
So, I’m not clear on if this is solved or something more to examined? In your last post, the image is still being rendered too small?
The outer rectangular white background is just a background when I converted the image to jpeg.
The legal size paper is the rectangle with bold black line on four corners .
Ok, so all good now?
