breakup large archive file into smaller portions

Hello,
I am currently using FileRoller to archive whole directory trees. These resulting archive files would end up larger than the capacity of a DVDROM.
What program should I use to break the archive file into smaller portions so that I can burn them into CDROMs or DVDs. In WinZip, there is something called spanning. Is there something similar in the linux world? What program would that be?
Thanks
