hello people! I just installed my first “non-windows anything” on my laptop and it happened to be opensuse. It was such as an easy experience, i love it. still getting use it though.

I got a question: When posting a reply to a article (like ones on the front page) it tells you to put in a spam password but i just dont get it. It says something like what is f-our plus t-en.
its definitely not 14, f-ourteen, or fourteen. huh?

ok thanks!

-=welcome=- to our friendly little corner of the software world…

i wonder how you picked this chit-chat forum to ask the question?

as far as i can tell, the ‘front page’ of the forum is where all the
various forums are listed, here:
http://forums.opensuse.org/

to find this forum you have scrool WAY WAY down the page to the one
that says: "General Chit-Chat - A friendly place to converse about
your adventures with openSUSE, your weekend, your boss, your new car,
and generally stuff that doesn’t fit somewhere else (and we must ask:
PLEASE do not post help questions here)

you did GOOD to not post in applications or any listed above this
forum, but just a little further down the page is one named:
“Forum Usage Support & Information - Questions on using forum software
and/or requesting information about the forums”

which would be the PERFECT place to ask…because the folks who claim
to be (or are) forums gurus hang there…

as for the answer to your riddle: like you, 4 + 10 = 14 in my
world…but, i’ve ever seen this “spam password” you speak of…

when you say “When posting a reply to a article (like ones on the
front page)” what is the URL address of that “front page”…go back
there and try again, maybe it will ask f-our plus o-ne and accept
five, f-ive or 5, or 5- or 2.5 x 2 hey! maybe it wanted

4 + 10 = 12 + 2

seem silly to me!!

Hrm. i tried again but failed.

for example, i tried posting a reply in
openSUSE News » openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 4 Release

Spam protection: Sum of t-wo + s-ix ?
the answer is not eight or 8…

i just posted there, and worked for me exactly as you expected, that
is it asked for s-ix plus f-our and accepted 10, immediately:

Welcome to openSUSE and to openSUSE forums.

I recommend you take a look at these 3 stickie and 1 wiki

In that concepts wiki, pay attention to what it has to say about installing software. Linux is not like Windows, where in Windows one goes to the developers web site and downloads an executeable. Instead in Linux for a number of good reasons, many many software applications are stored on file servers, known as repositories. And instead of going directly to the repository to grab the software, one runs a software package manager to go grab the software for one. There are a number of valid reasons for this approach.

This means one needs to tell Linux what repositories (file servers) to use. OpenSUSE comes setup by default with 3 official repositories (OSS, Non-OSS, and Update). I recommend you add one and only one more repository, which is Packman repository. And then stick with those 4 and only those 4. Do not permanently add any others. Just those 4. There is guidance here for adding Packman: Repositories/11.2 - openSUSE-Community

Once you have those 4 added, you can go to YaST > Software > Software Mangement and search for and install applications using YaST Software Mangement to manage the installation for you.

Note a couple of search engines for software applications for openSUSE

Now note those search engines may send you to different repositories (other than the 4 I recommend) to get software. If that is the case, then add the repository, install the application, and then REMOVE the repository afterward. If you use the 1 click install (which I do not like) then be certain you do NOT retain the repository after the install is done. This is very important. New users often end up with more than the 4 permanent repositories that I recommend and it causes them extensive problems. So just stick with the 4 I recommend and you will be fine.

Hello manbat and welcome to the community!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Good luck!

Welcome to the forums, manbat! rotfl!

Manbat, I am pretty much in the same status you are, I have been using linux for about 6 weeks now and I love it, minmal probs, but hey I’m learning. These forums are a great learning tool, and so far, everyone who has helped, has been great, accurate, and yes, very much helpful.

Can someone fill me in on this Spam Password? I haven’t come across this yet, Is it for the forums, or in the 11.2 OS itself, kinda confused about that…

thanks in advance

-cheers

It’s not for the forum but for replying to articles on the front page, like this one:
openSUSE News » openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 4 Release

You have to answer a spam protection question like this one:
“Spam protection: Sum of t-hree + n-ine ?”

The answer here would be, obviously, 12.
The hyphens have been inserted so that bots can’t spam the articles.

Hey guys, thanks for your responses.
oldcpu - thanks for your tips on the repositories. its something new to me and im getting the hang of it.

and on posting on the main page news, I give up. If t-en plus t-wo doesnt equal to 12, then I have no idea, :expressionless:

Hello, I did as you said and it still didnt work, so i reformatted the laptop and started all over. now it works!

about your question: I posted here to just say hi and ask a simple question (that i thought was no big deal) sorry!

you missed the point! i didn’t say your posting here was a big deal…

i also didn’t fully explain that some of the community have been
trying for some months to figure out why so many new folks
inadvertently post help questions to our non-help forums…

and, the forums front page has just been changed to try and make it
easier for first time posters to get their help questions into the
place where most helpers are likely to be…

btw, happy you got that mystery problem solved…guess it was just a
faulty install…
