Ok, I think I made a mistake initially when I asked you for help. My presumption was that I should be using the older full proprietary Nvidia driver for the best performance but they may not even support my card properly if at all. The real truth appears to be that at least for newer cards like mine the hybrid open driver with an open kernel with proprietary Nvida drivers on top is the right one. When I said it was working apparently it had defaulted to and installed the open drivers instead.
Just a heads up to anyone else having troubles with this.
No problems whatsoever with the open driver.
