Borked Fresh Install (openSUSE 11.1 x86_64 GNOME)

Just like the title says.

I installed a YMP from the opensuse-community.org site to get MPlayer and WMV Video files to play correctly in Firefox.

Well, I got that working, and presumably, in the process, messed up the gconf settings daemon from ever running again.

Now when I try to run ‘gnome-appearance-properties’, I get the following error message:

Unable to start the settings manager ‘gnome-settings-daemon’.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager.

Here’s my current process output:

ps aux | grep -i kd

Any ideas?

And if these codecs are so wrong and/or unsupported, then where can I purchase a legal copy to install on my openSUSE?

Thanks in advanced.

Short version: I’m an openSUSE newbie.

Long version:

I ended up reading through the YMP file to figure out what all software I needed to remove, downgrade, or reinstall.

At this point, I still couldn’t run ‘gnome-appearance-settings’ from my user account, but it worked under root. So I tried removing all directories under my home dir that was dot-prefixed, and still, I couldn’t run it.

Then, it dawned on me… there must be a control panel item to access it properly. There it was: Computer > Control Center > Look and Feel > Appearance.

Boy do I feel stupid. :shame: It sure was irritating though.

Anyways, I read up some more on Fluendo, and I think I’ll be purchasing their codec pack in just a minute.

Also, FWIW, does anyone know if PowerDVD or similar application will be available to openSUSE soon?

Gee, does none of Amarok, Xine, SMplayer, V4L, Videolan or the others
suit your pleasure?
