Booting from SD or Express Card SSD possible?

Is it possible to install Suse partially on an SD-Card or an ExpressCard SSD?

Both slots are currently unused on my laptop. My current Suse 11.1 just uses 8GB for root, so buying an 16GB ExpressCard SSD would be an affordable option. However, I don’t want to buy unless there is hope to succeed without too much pain.

My hope would be that this lowers power consumption, since the HDD would be able to spin down more often. Furthermore, wouldn’t this also improve speed?

Or at least, is it possible to mount an SD-card as swap space to speed up suspend/unsuspend?

(Someone must have thought of this before, but I could not find anything. Any existing links?)

This worked for me once upon a time… I tried it since and it didn’t though, and I’ve no idea why. Might give you some ideas anyway…

EeeUser Forum / openSUSE onto SDHC without CD drive -> STUCK!

It isn’t fast. In fact it’s kinda painful, unless SDHC cards have got much faster - but it does run.
