Boot to weird terminal with bad resolution, no password prompt

Hi, I see the mantis screen with the flying balls and then it goes straight to the terminal (attached pic) without a password prompt.

So there is no desktop and the resolution is off as you can see.

Any comments on what is the source of the problem?

Thanks much!

And what openSUSE version are you using?

This looks like your desktop (KDE?) isn’t starting correctly and you’re using failsafe mode.
Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace twice and you should get to the login screen.
Does it work if you select a different desktop session there? (IceWM f.e.)

Please upload your /var/log/Xorg.0.log somewhere (SUSE Paste f.e.) and post a link here.

Automatic login to failsafe X mode, I think. Or similar name.

Hello first poster and welcome here.

As you may already have read from the two posts above, the posters there are guessing about the version of openSUSE you use and about the desktop you use.

Please take into account that people here are just openSUSE users like you and as such are not clairvoyant. You should always provide any information about what you use with your problem description. That increases the quality of the answers you may get enormously.

Apologies. I am new to Linux as well. Its 12.2 KDE.

ctrl-alt-bcksp 2x did take me to the login screen, but upon login i am back to the same “failsafe mode” except with mantis background now (pic attached)

heres the log you asked for : SUSE Paste

Click on the “wrench” symbol on the top-left at the login screen and select a different session in there. Does that work?
Try to explicitely select KDE there.

I see nothing wrong in there.
Did it ever work before or is this a fresh installation?

If it never worked anyway you could try to install the proprietary nvidia driver:
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers#Easy_way_to_get_NVIDIA_drivers

Clicked wrench and changed to normal KDE plasma and it worked. Thanks big guy.

And its always been working great and suddenly froze on friday and wouldn’t log on. I now know it was because of low disk space. I repartitioned the disks but couldn’t get out of failsafe until I posted in this forum
