I have 12.1 with gnome installed. I would like to boot into terminal mode and startx manually when needed. Hopefully I do not have to re-install the whole system.

at the first green screen type a single 3 into the boot options
line, and then press enter…
to then launch your gnome, do NOT run startx, instead run
su -
init 5

I think entering a “3” on the kernel boot line suffices.
Notice that startx is not recommended aka wanted by the devs, thus some
things might not work in gnome as expected. You have to do several things.
There are posts around that explain how to get around those, google the
opensuse site. For instance:

sorry, i forgot to mention that openSUSE 12.1 hits it end of life in
20 days… cite: https://en.opensuse.org/Lifetime
so, you should use the 20 days wisely to complete your move to a
supported version (12.2 or 12.3)…to do that you might want to
follow one of these step-by-step ways:
http://tinyurl.com/35p966c
http://tinyurl.com/93uemsr
http://tinyurl.com/7l4m2td
personally i never do any of those…instead i save data (photos,
mail, music, etc) to a safe of machine location and then do a format,
install, and complete system rebuild.
decide what is best for you…
